The Best Two-Player Board Games for Couples, Roommates and Rivals
Share
Plenty of board games say "2 to 5 players" on the box and then quietly fall flat with two. The games below are different: they were built for exactly two people, or they play best that way. Whether it is a weeknight with your partner, a roommate who wants a rematch, or a friend who always thinks they are the better strategist, these are the two-player games our staff reach for most.
Our favorite two-player board games right now
7 Wonders Duel ($34.99). If you only own one two-player game, this is a strong candidate. You draft cards from a shaped tableau over three Ages, and you can win three different ways: overrun your opponent's capital, corner the market on science, or simply build the better civilization. That tension keeps every game close. Plan on about 30 minutes once you know the rules.
The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth ($39.99). From the same design team as 7 Wonders Duel, but with a much stronger story. One player leads the Fellowship and tries to get the Ring to Mount Doom; the other plays Sauron, sending the Nazgul after Frodo and Sam while spreading armies across the map. It plays in three chapters, and the two sides feel different, which makes it great for swapping roles and playing again.
Jaipur ($24.99). A quick trading card game where you buy and sell goods in the markets of Jaipur, using camels to swing the market in your favor. It teaches in five minutes, finishes in about 20, and still rewards real decision making. This is the one we hand to couples who are new to hobby games.
Mindbug: First Contact ($29.99). A tiny box with a big twist. You play hybrid creatures to battle your opponent, but when you summon one, your opponent may use a Mindbug to steal it. Playing your best card at the wrong time can sink you. Games run 15 to 25 minutes, and it scratches the same itch as a trading card game without any collecting.
Star Realms ($17.99). A fast deck-building space battle designed by Magic Pro Tour champions. Each player starts with a small deck, buys ships and bases from a shared trade row, and tries to knock the other player out. It fits in a jacket pocket and is one of the best values on our shelves. (Larry’s personal pick)
Lighter and puzzly picks for two
Not everyone wants a head-to-head fight. These games still have a winner, but they feel more like racing each other to solve a puzzle.
- Azul Duel ($29.99). The tile-drafting favorite rebuilt for two, with a new stacking twist and pattern plates that change the goals from game to game. Great if you already love Azul.
- Flamecraft Duals ($29.99). A travel-friendly spin-off of Flamecraft where you try to line up artisan dragons, with rare dual-colored dragons that count double. Cute, quick and surprisingly sharp.
- Land vs Sea ($29.99). One player builds land, the other builds sea, and you both place double-sided tiles into a shared medieval map. Extra scoring layers unlock as you learn, so it grows with you. It also plays three or four, but head to head is where it shines.
- Toy Battle ($32.99). Two toy armies fight over bases on land, sea and even in space. Each turn you either draw two troops or place one and use its effect. Reach the enemy headquarters or control more territory to win. A good pick for families with kids who like a little conflict.
- Overboss Duel ($29.99). Rival boss monsters draft terrain tiles and monster tokens, then place them anywhere, including on your opponent's land. Part puzzle, part sabotage.
How to choose. A few quick rules of thumb from behind the counter:
- New to hobby games: start with Jaipur or Azul Duel. Short rules, short games, lots of "one more."
- You want a real strategy game: 7 Wonders Duel or Duel for Middle-earth. Both reward repeat plays.
- You like card games and combos: Mindbug or Star Realms.
- You want something calmer: Flamecraft Duals or Land vs Sea.
Two-player games also make some of the easiest gifts on any list. They are small, they are affordable, and the person you give one to now has a built-in reason to invite you over.
