Which grade should you buy?
High Grade (HG) is 1/144 scale, the cheapest and the fastest build, and it is the right place to start. Real Grade (RG) is the same size but far more detailed, with a full inner frame and a much higher part count — buy one after a couple of HGs rather than as your first kit. Master Grade (MG) is 1/100, noticeably bigger, and a proper weekend project.
You do not need paint
Gunpla is molded in color and snaps together without glue. A pair of side cutters and a hobby knife to clean up the nub marks is genuinely all a good-looking build requires. Panel-lining with a fine marker is the one cheap extra step that makes the biggest visible difference.

The AK 3Gen and Army Painter ranges on this site cover topcoats, panel washes and metallics that behave well on styrene. A matt or satin topcoat kills the toy-like shine and is usually the first upgrade people make after their third or fourth kit.
